Why the Colombian Caribbean?

The Sinú-San Jacinto basin, one of the most promising geological formations in the country for geothermal exploration, is located in the Colombian Caribbean. It brings together three exceptional conditions: geothermal anomalies confirmed by the SGC, pre-existing logistical and energy infrastructure, and direct connection to the National Interconnected System. The SGC identifies it as one of the priority zones for geothermal exploration in Colombia.

The national context

Colombia has the potential. The Caribbean has the opportunity.

Colombia is one of the Latin American countries with the greatest geothermal potential.

The Colombian State (SGC-ANH) estimates a generation potential of approximately 1,170 MW in the national territory. However, to date, no geothermal project operates commercially in the country.

The Colombian Caribbean represents one of the least explored frontiers of this potential.

Unlike the volcanic systems of the Andes, the Sinú–San Jacinto sedimentary basin offers an accessible medium-enthalpy geothermal resource, close to existing electrical infrastructure and located in a region with high energy demand.

Featured KPI: 1,170 MW — Estimated national geothermal potential, with not a single MW in commercial operation.

A geothermal signal documented by the Colombian government

In northwestern Colombia, in the departments of Sucre and Córdoba, there is a geothermal anomaly documented in multiple geophysical studies conducted by Colombian government entities. Available data reveal a system with the technical characteristics required for the development of firm renewable power generation.

35°C/km — Anomalous geothermal gradient

Temperature variation with depth significantly greater than the normal continental crust gradient.

100–120 mW/m²  —  Heat flux

Measured terrestrial heat flow in the basin, consistent with exploitable medium-enthalpy geothermal systems.

>2 km — Heat source depth

Estimated depth of the heat source, according to geophysical studies carried out by Colombian State entities (SGC – ANH) in the Sinú–San Jacinto basin. Accessible with conventional drilling technology for geothermal wells.

Strategic position

Geothermal resource + existing infrastructure

The TEPEW exploration area offers the geological conditions for geothermal development and boasts an optimal logistical and energy position to connect the generated power to the National Interconnected System.

Approximately 14 km from the Coveñas electrical substation (230 kV) and 15 km from Toluviejo, the generated power can be directly connected to the NIS without the need for long-range transmission infrastructure.

The project is located in a strategic corridor with direct road access on the Troncal de Occidente, a short distance from the main cities of the Caribbean region — Sincelejo, Montería, and Cartagena —, the industrial infrastructure of Coveñas, and the Colombian Caribbean seaports.
